Have you ever been to a party that was maybe dragging a little bit? Did you start looking for the door? But then, just as you’re planning your escape, you hear the notes of a song you really like. Then another. And another. The next thing you know, your hair is wet from sweat, you’ve dragged your crowd to the edge of the stage, and you’re wondering how much longer you can hold your urge to go to the bathroom.

Nothing manages a mood quite like music. Imagine “Jaws” without its theme song. Two notes. That’s all it took to terrify millions. 40 years later and that score still makes us stop and check the water for sharks.

Life is made better by music. I think we take it for granted, this blending of chest-thumping sounds and concise words that express the feelings that we can’t put into words. Now is as good a time as any to just sit and listen and find the meaning that was put there for us.

“Under Pressure” . . . Queen, David Bowie
I love this song for so many reasons. The combo of Bowie and Mercury, the iconic bass line, the use of the orchestra. Perfection.

Lyrics of note: It’s the terror of knowing / What the world is about / Watching some good friends screaming / “Let me out!”

“I Can’t Get Next to You” … The Temptations
There’s a scene in the movie “Hope Floats” where Birdie, the character played by Sandra Bullock, dons a funny costume and dances to this song in an attempt to cheer up her daughter, Bernice. It’s a great example of what we do as parents to put our kids at ease.

“Drinking Alone” … Carrie Underwood
Good or bad, a lot of us have upped our alcohol consumption. If it makes you feel better, you aren’t really drinking alone. We’re all drinking alone, but together.

Lyrics of note: We should be drinkin’ alone / Together / Drownin’ the pain is better / With somebody else who got problems / We ain’t gonna solve ’em / But misery loves company

“Hole in the Bottle” … Kelsea Ballerini
Lyrics of note: There’s a hole in the bottle / Leakin’ all this wine / It’s already empty and it ain’t even suppertime

“Fix a Drink” … Chris Janson
Lyrics of note: I turn on FOX News and then CNN / But it’s the same dang thing all over again / The world’s in the toilet and the market’s in the tank / Well, I can’t fix that / But I can fix a drink

“Stayin’ Alive” … Lizzo
Lizzo is here to save us!

“U Can’t Touch This” … MC Hammer
This song is nonsense. Kind of like the world right now. The fact that this song was such a hit and continues to live on is proof that we’re all a little whack when it comes to something catchy and dance-y.

“Louisiana Saturday Night” … Mel McDaniel
What else you gonna do? Kick off your shoes and dance in the kitchen ’til the morning light, I guess.

“I’m Alive” … Kenny Chesney with Dave Matthews
Lyrics of note: It’d be easy to add up all the pain / And all the dreams you sat and watched go up in flames / Dwell on the wreckage as it smolders in the rain / But not me, I’m alive / And today, you know, that’s good enough for me / Breathing in and out’s a blessing, can’t you see?

A little dramatic if you’re describing my canceled spring break, but not so much for a small business owner.

“I Will Survive” … Gloria Gaynor; or Cake (pick one)
Depends on how I’m feeling if I want Gloria or Cake.

Lyrics of note: At first I was afraid / I was petrified…

“Crazy” … Gnarls Barkley
Lyrics of note: Come on now, who do you / Who do you think you are? / Hahaha, bless your soul / You really think you’re in control? / Well, I think you’re crazy

“Livin’ on a Prayer” … Bon Jovi
Are we halfway there? Maybe? Either way, gotta hold on to what we’ve got.

“Home” … Phillip Phillips
Lyrics of note: Settle down, it’ll all be clear / Don’t pay no mind to the demons / They fill you with fear

“Lose My Mind” … Brett Eldredge
Yes. Yes, we are losing our minds.

“Kill Em With Kindness” … Selena Gomez
Lots of family time getting to you? Just kill ’em with kindness.

Lyrics of note: The world can be a nasty place / You know, I know it, yeah

“Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You) … Kelly Clarkson

“Stuck In The Middle With You” … Stealers Wheel
Lyrics of note: Tryin’ to make sense of it all / But I can see that it makes no sense at all / Clowns to the left of me / Jokers to the right / Here I am / Stuck in the middle with you

“See You Again” … Wiz Khalifa, Charlie Puth
Lyrics of note: It’s been a long day without you, my friend

“Let’s Stay Home Tonight” … NEEDTOBREATH
Every word. Every single word of this.

“All My Favorite People” … Maren Morris (with Brothers Osborne)
I hope you’re being quarantined with some of your favorite people and texting with those that don’t live with you.

“House Party” … Sam Hunt
Lyrics of note: We’ll have a house party / We don’t need nobody

“Toxic” … Britney Spears
Lyrics of note: Don’t you know that you’re toxic?

“The Cure” … Lady Gaga

“Another Saturday Night” … Sam Cooke
Lyrics of note: Another Saturday night / And I ain’t got nobody / I got some money ’cause I just got paid / Now how I wish I had someone to talk to / I’m in an awful way

Sounds like someone needs to download Zoom for a virtual happy hour.

“What’s Going On” … Marvin Gaye
What IS going on??

“I Feel It Coming” … The Weekend, Daft Punk
Every cough, every sneeze. I feel it coming.

“Only Human” … Jonas Brothers
Lyrics of note: It’s only human / You know that it’s real

“You Need to Calm Down” … Taylor Swift
I’m making an effort to stop listening to the news in the morning. Because “I’m just like damn, it’s 7 am.” Too much reality to start my day.

“Stronger” … Kanye West
I don’t like Kanye. Like, at all. But, damn, if this song doesn’t actually make you feel stronger.

Party on, friends. Hope you like your background music.
